classrooms

We are proud of the wonderful staff we have at The Children’s Center of Wakefield. We have a team of teachers from experienced to new teacher graduates. The staff works towards the common goal of nurturing and encouraging the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth of children. Our dedicated staff continues to grow and strive toward their goals by attending workshops, taking courses, and attending conferences. All staff have the appropriate safety, first aid and CPR training as well as up to date medical examinations and immunizations.

Our teachers believe that the child defines the curriculum and that children learn best through play. Our curriculum supports the development of children through cognitive, language, social, emotional, creative, physical, and aesthetic activities. Active exploration of the environment through child-initiated experiences comprises most of each child's time at the school. Teachers provide opportunities for individual, small group, and large group experiences to enhance the child's own choices and direct their own learning throughout the day.

All classrooms are set up to meet the developmental needs of the children and to provide them the opportunity to make choices. They contain four learning zones:

  • Gross Motor: This area encourages children to use their large muscles through climbing, block play, music, and movement.
  • Dramatic Play: This area encourages children to engage in role-playing activities with the use of props.
  • Quiet: This area allows children a space to retreat to for some quiet time and encourages children to develop language/ literacy skills using books and soft toys and develop fine motor coordination with the use of manipulatives.
  • Messy: This area encourages children to express themselves and be creative through art and to heighten their sensory awareness through a variety of sensory oriented activities.

Infants

Our infant room serves children ages 6 weeks to 15 months by recognizing their individual differences and needs. The infant program is designed to help children feel secure with attentive adults warmly responding consistently and supportively to each child. Routine care giving such as feeding and diapering provide opportunities for significant one on one interaction with adult caregivers. Each infant is cared for individually and we allow their parents to form their own schedule.

Toddler 1

Toddler 1 serves children 15 months to 2 years and allows your child to explore their surroundings and expand their imagination. They will begin to socialize with others and learn to share and take turns. They will develop self-help skills by feeding themselves with utensils and drinking from a sippy cup. Your child will gain gross motor skills by climbing, walking and running independently outside. They will develop fine motor skills by scribbling with crayons and participating in sensory activities such as water play. Your child will also increase their language skills as well as social and emotional skills allowing us to know their wants and needs.

toddler 2

Toddler 2 serves children 2 years to 2.9 years old. They are filled with magical discoveries, developmental achievements, making strides in independence and a multitude of challenges. The toddler staff is dedicated to ensuring that not only your child’s needs are met in a stimulating and developmentally appropriate environment, but also to helping parents embrace and savor the wonderful adventures that their toddler will lead them on.

preschool 1

Our Preschool 1 program, for children 3 years, introduces the small children to that larger world outside of the home. We help children develop good personal habits and self-help skills. Initial skills in language, math, science, and the arts are introduced in hands-on open-ended ways. The teachers’ help children learn how to interact socially with their peers, as well as taking turns and listening skills. By helping to develop self-esteem and confidence, teachers provide the emotional security children need to develop curiosity and enjoyment in the process of learning.

preschool 2

Our Preschool 2 program, for children 4 years, continues to build and enrich children’s skills and strengths. Gross and fine motor skills are refined. Cognitive and critical thinking skills are continuing to develop. Our goal is to help your child find out what their interests are and develop them as well as try out new experiences.

pre K

Our Pre- Kindergarten program, for children with one year until kindergarten, prepares them for their formal schooling to begin in Kindergarten. Pre-reading, early math, science and social studies activities are introduced. We are working towards developing lifelong learners as your child develops into a unique individual in this complex, exciting world. We hope to provide a secure and safe environment where children can feel free to experience new ideas and test their skills.

outdoor space

CCW is fortunate enough to have an expansive outdoor space on half an acre of land. We have two play yards equipped with age-appropriate play structures completed in 2017. Our infant/toddler yard has a climbing structure, sandbox, playhouses as well as push cars. Our preschool yard is a larger space with riding bikes, built in ground slides, climbing structure, music area, sandbox and swings.
